Director, Policy Treaty Relationships Policy Directorate This position is one of four Director positions within the Policy Wāhanga, who share with the Deputy Secretary, Policy responsibility for the overall leadership of Māori Public Policy.

Directors are responsible for:

  • Professional leadership as a member of the Senior Leadership Team of the Policy Wāhanga,
  • Developing and maintaining strong and constructive relationships within the Policy Wāhanga and Te Puni Kōkiri, and with Government departments, Māori stakeholders and other groups,
  • Developing Te Puni Kōkiri as an organisation highly regarded within and outside the state sector as a strategic policy advisor, and
  • Providing leadership and direction to the directorate to ensure a high performing and motivated team. This role will lead the Treaty Relationships Policy Directorate which has principal responsibility for policy issues that are centered on the Treaty relationship, including among other things, overall advice on: Crown-Māori relationships and specifically post-settlement relationships; Treaty settlements; contemporary Treaty issues; Foreshore and Seabed matters, constitutional matters; and international relationships.

Applicants must demonstrate significant experience in Crown-Māori relationship dynamics and navigating these relationships within the context of central government. An in-depth understanding of Māori communities, along with evidence of an ability to ensure that Māori issues and interests are central in policy development will be essential, as will outstanding analytical and strategic thinking and well-honed leadership and relationship management skills.
