Endorsement process: Statutory Recognition of Mokomoko pardon

Te whānau a Mokomoko Leadership Group (TWAMLG) and the Crown have initialled an Agreement to Introduce Legislation to Give Statutory Recognition to the Mokomoko Pardon. A copy of the agreement can be found here [PDF, 2.5mb].

TWAMLG seek to confirm their mandate from Te whānau a Mokomoko to represent them in discussions with the Crown regarding the statutory recognition of the pardon of their tupuna Mokomoko, and to endorse an agreement with the Crown to give statutory recognition to the pardon by introducing legislation to restore and character, mana and reputation of Mokomoko and his whānau.

TWAMLG will be holding endorsement hui:

Wellington (Te Puni Kōkiri House, 143 Lambton Quay)

Monday, 19 September 2011, 6pm

Auckland (Mount Richmond Hotel and Conference Centre, 676 Mt Wellington Highway, Mt Wellington)

Tuesday, 20 September 2011, 7pm

Ōpōtiki (Waiaua Marae, Old Motu Road, Waiaua)

Wednesday, 21 September 2011, 6pm

The following resolutions will be put to the hui:

1: That TWAMLG are mandated to represent Te whānau a Mokomoko in discussions with the Crown regarding the wording of the statutory recognition of the pardon of their tūpuna Mokomoko.

2: That Te whānau a Mokomoko endorse the approach outlined in the “Agreement to Introduce Legislation to Give Statutory Recognition to the Mokomoko Pardon” (in particular clause 2).

3: That TWAMLG counter-sign the “Agreement to Introduce Legislation to Give Statutory Recognition to the Mokomoko Pardon” with the Crown.

4: That TWAMLG represent Te whānau a Mokomoko in relation to the legislative process to support the passage of the Mokomoko Pardon legislation provided for in clause 2 of the “Agreement to Introduce Legislation to Give Statutory Recognition to the Mokomoko Pardon”.

The proposal is outside the Treaty settlement process and will not settle any historical Treaty of Waitangi claims.

The hui is open to members of Te whānau a Mokomoko. Voting on the resolutions will be by show of hands. The hui facilitator will inform hui attendees of the voting process and eligibility to vote. Members of the whānau must be of legal voting age (18 years or older) to vote and trace descent from the tupuna Mokomoko by birth, legal adoption or whāngai.

An attendance register will be kept at each hui and checked for eligibility by knowledgeable members of the whānau. Kaumātua and kuia who are in attendance may be asked to verify whakapapa, where appropriate, to confirm eligibility.

Te Puni Kōkiri will be invited to attend the hui as Crown observers.
