Government policy is a critical lever in delivering better outcomes to and for whānau, hapū, Iwi and Māori and for achieving our vision of Thriving Whānau.

To enhance the effectiveness of government policy, we have released Te Tautuhi ō Rongo - a public policy framework that helps the public service apply a consistent, structured approach when preparing public policy and advice affecting Māori.
In simple terms, Te Tautuhi ō Rongo acknowledges that, through the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi | The Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti | the Treaty), Māori have collective and individual rights and interests.
Who can use Te Tautuhi ō Rongo?
The framework is a tool the public service can use when developing policy, engaging with Māori, and/or exploring how to give effect to Te Tiriti | the Treaty in their work. By embedding the framework in their work, agencies will be better positioned to consider issues from a Māori perspective. This will uplift social and economic factors and result in better policy, more successful outcomes, and a more resilient and inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand.
