Te Puni Kōkiri invites submissions, views or inquiries about the Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri Iwi Trust’s (Iwi Trust) Deed of Mandate. Submissions must reach Te Puni Kōkiri no later than Monday, 25 August 2014. All correspondence will be subject to the Official Information Act 1982. Submissions can be mailed to the Manager, Treaty Settlements Team, Te Puni Kōkiri, PO Box 3943, WELLINGTON 6140, or emailed to email@example.com. A copy of all submissions will be provided to the Iwi Trust.
The Iwi Trust, on behalf of Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri, seeks to enter into direct settlement negotiations for the comprehensive and final settlement of all Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri’s historical Treaty of Waitangi claims. The proposed settlement will require ratification by Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri before a Deed of Settlement is signed with the Crown.
The Deed of Mandate states that the Iwi Trust held six mandate hui from 8 February 2014 to 22 March 2014. These hui took place on the Chatham Islands and in Auckland, Waitara, Wellington and Christchurch. Voting was carried out by postal ballot, by internet ballot and ballot cast at mandate hui. Seventy six percent of those who participated voted in favour of the resolution to mandate the Iwi Trust to negotiate Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri’s historical claims.
The claims to be negotiated by the Iwi Trust are all claims, whether registered or unregistered, that arise from Crown actions and omissions that occurred prior to 21 September 1992, including, but not limited to: Wai 65, Wai 181, Wai 460 and Wai 1382. Wai claims to be negotiated also include Wai 64 insofar as it relates to Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri.
The Iwi Trust is seeking a mandate to represent all persons of Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri who descend from the ancestors listed below, including those who can affiliate to the following marae or hapū listed below.
