Escape. Hide, Tell: It’s what to do in an armed offender attack in a crowded place

The New Zealand Government has just launched an information campaign that helps Kiwis know what to do in an armed offender attack in a crowded place.

Crowded places such as entertainment and sports venues, public transports hubs, supermarkets and shopping centres can pose extra risk, as they can be the target of an armed offender attack - someone with a weapon trying to hurt many people.

While unlikely we will ever encounter an armed offender, it’s important everyone knows what to do.

Remember these three words: Escape, Hide, Tell.

ESCAPE - Move quickly and quietly away from danger, but only if it is safe to do.

HIDE - Stay out of sight and silence your mobile phone.

TELL - Call the Police by dialling 111 when it is safe.

We’re encouraging everyone to have a discussion. This can be within your workplace, sports or community groups and with friends and whānau. We’ve provided some guidance on how to start the conversation that you can download on the New Zealand Police website.

Know what to do – it will help to keep us all safe.

More information on the campaign, detail on what to do, and resources like posters, can be found on the New Zealand Police website.
