A humble marae is aiming to grow one million native plants as part of their cultural strategy. Tukorehe marae, on state highway one just south of Levin, is on target to meet this goal. Turakirae is the southern boundary between Te Atiawa and Ngāti Kahungunu. Rimutaka is the mountain range that separates Wairarapa and the Hutt Valley. The region extends into the Horowhenua and travels downs through Kapiti and Porirua, crossing over to the Tau Ihu o te waka a Maui – the top of the South Island. It includes also Rekohu – Wharekauri, the Chatham Islands.
According to the 2006 Census, the Māori population in the region was 67,338 representing 11.9 percent of the total New Zealand Māori population.
