E ai ki te tatauranga taupori o 2006, 40,899 ngā Māori kei tēnei rohe e noho ana. Koira te 7.2 ōrau o ngā Māori katoa o Aotearoa.
12 ngā iwi kei tēnei rohe. 80 ngā hapū kei te whai hononga ki aua iwi. 120 ngā marae. Ko ngā waka o ngā hapū me iwi nei ko Mataatua, Takitimu, Te Arawa me Tainui.
