Toitū ngā taonga o Tangaroa Toitū ngā taonga o Tāne Toitū te Iwi
Te Waipounamu region is the largest of Te Puni Kōkiri regional areas, covering approximately 49 percent of New Zealand (134,672,000 hectares). The regional boundaries starts north of Kaikōura on the east coast of the South Island, goes south to Rakiura (Stewart Island) and up the West Coast to Kahurangi Point. Geographically, the region aligns with the takiwā of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and includes four regional authorities, 22 territorial authorities and five district health boards.
According to the 2006 Census, the Māori population in the region was 62,277 representing 11.0 percent of the total New Zealand Māori population. Half of the Māori population in the region is under the age of 21.9 years.
