Te Tairāwhiti

Te rohe o Te Tairāwhiti begins north at Potikirua and ends south at the Mōhaka river and runs inland to Matawai and down to Tuai at Waikaremoana. We are the children of the sunrise, the first point in the world to greet the dawn of a new day. The regional boundary covers approximately 1,200,000 hectares of very steeply dissected hill country.

According to the 2006 Census, the Māori population in the region was 24,555 representing 4.3 percent of the total New Zealand Māori population. Half of the population in the region is under the age of 25.3 years.
