19 - 21 November 2009 | Waikaremoana to Wairoa, Hawkes Bay
The 2009 Genesis Energy Lake to Lighthouse Challenge will be contested on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st of November. The event will start at Lake Waikaremoana in the Urewera National Park, located in Northern Hawkes Bay on the East Coast of New Zealand‘s North Island. Competitors will traverse approx 185 km of stunning native bush tracks, back country gravel roads, farmland and rivers on foot, mountain bike and by kayak, to finish at the coastal town of Wairoa. Te rohe o Te Tairāwhiti begins north at Potikirua and ends south at the Mōhaka river and runs inland to Matawai and down to Tuai at Waikaremoana. We are the children of the sunrise, the first point in the world to greet the dawn of a new day. The regional boundary covers approximately 1,200,000 hectares of very steeply dissected hill country.
According to the 2006 Census, the Māori population in the region was 24,555 representing 4.3 percent of the total New Zealand Māori population. Half of the population in the region is under the age of 25.3 years.
