Albie Pryor, of Ngāti Awa and Ngāti Rangitihi, played in every position in the forward pack apart from hooker. He was hard and uncompromising in the way he played, yet he possessed a good sense of humour, one such example being when he charged Waka Nathan and his family the entry fee at the Māori Sports Awards after inviting Nathan to present the main award. The regional boundaries of Te Moana ā Toi are from Athenree in the north, to Lotten Point in the south-East. Within its boundaries are five territorial authorities: Tauranga City Council, Western Bay of Plenty District Council, Whakatāne District Council, Ōpōtiki District Council, Kawerau District Council. Environment Bay of Plenty is the regional council.
According to the 2006 Census, the Māori population in the region was 40,899 representing 7.2 percent of the total New Zealand Māori population.
There are 12 iwi with approximately 80 affiliate hapū groups representing 120 marae who descend from the Mataatua, Takitimu, Te Arawa and Tainui waka.
