Te Taiwhenua o Tamatea hosted the 2009 Ngāti Kahungunu sports awards in Waipukurau on 7 November 2009 with the support of Te Puni Kōkiri. World champion shearer Johnny Kirkpatrick took out the overall sportsperson award after winning the sportsman of the year award. Maea Tua-Davidson was awarded sportswoman of the year for her international league career with the Kiwi Ferns. The Takitimu regional boundaries are the Mohaka River in the north to the Wairarapa in the south with the western boundaries formed by the ranges from Te Haroto south to the Tararua and Ruahine ranges. The region is spread over Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa taking in the three main urban areas of Napier, Hastings and Masterton. The smaller centres of Waipukurau, Waipawa, Dannevirke, Woodville, Eketahuna, Pahiatua, Carterton, Greyton, Martinborough and Featherston, catering to the largely rural population.
According to the 2006 Census, the Māori population in the region was 37,737 representing 6.7 percent of the total New Zealand Māori population. Half of the Māori population in the region is under the age of 22.0 years.
