Public consultation on Te Ture Whenua Maori Act 1993

Amendments to Te Ture Whenua Maori Act 1993 are being considered following public consultation in 2025, where almost 60 engagement sessions were held nationwide.

Last updated: Tuesday, 9 December 2025 | Rātū, 09 Hakihea, 2025

Decisions on what changes may be progressed through a potential Amendment Bill are still to be considered.

Potential changes are intended to streamline processes and support easier navigation of aspects of Te Ture Whenua Maori Act 1993. These may support engagement in and development of the Māori land system, promoting connection and the economic growth of Māori land for the benefit of the owners and their communities.

Read the discussion document outlining the proposals and see the FAQs for what’s happening and how the process works.
