Following public consultation on proposed changes to the Te Ture Whenua Maori Act in 2025, this paper sought Cabinet agreement on 12 targeted amendments to address barriers to the development and utilisation of Māori land and support economic growth.
The amendments aim to streamline processes, increase landowner autonomy, strengthen governance and management options for Māori land assets, support housing and land development opportunities, and improve emergency response and recovery arrangements for ungoverned Māori land.
