As tangata whenua, Māori have collective and individual rights and interests that as the Crown’s agent, Government is expected to recognise, protect, support, and invest in. Government is responsible for ensuring the active partnership with iwi and Māori is supporting sustainable approaches that reflect those rights and interests.
Focus areas for this strategic priority
The work of Te Puni Kōkiri will focus on supporting Māori rights and interests in the areas of Te Whare o Te Reo Mauri Ora and Māori Broadcasting, a Crown–Māori partnership to address Te Pae Tawhiti (Wai 262) issues, and Te Taiao – the natural environment.
