Māori recover at a much slower rate than non-Māori from the impacts of economic shocks. This disproportionate recovery enables the systemic disparities that already exist between Māori and non-Māori to expand. Government needs to invest in Māori not only to enable Māori to return to pre-COVID levels, but also future-proof Māori against impending disruption likely to be caused by climate change, technological advancements and automation.
