Partner agencies for Paiheretia te Muka Tāngata

Paiheretia is a cross-agency initiative by Te Puni Kōkiri, Department of Corrections (Ara Poutama Aotearoa), and the Ministry of Social Development in partnership with Māori. The initiative is being co-designed with tāne, whānau Māori, hapū, iwi, Māori service providers, and others.

The Māori Pathway , including Paiheretia te Muka Tāngata, was funded through the Wellbeing Budget 2019.  It recognises that Māori are over-represented at every stage through the criminal justice system and change is needed to improve outcomes for Māori.

The Hōkai Rangi strategy 2019-2024 outlines a significant new direction developed in response to the devastating over-representation of Māori in the Corrections system.

It was designed in partnership with a Māori Reference Group comprising staff, providers, academics, experts, and people with lived experience.

Paiheretia te Muka Tāngata aligns with the Ministry of Social Development’s Māori Strategy and Action Plan, Te Pae Tata.

The vision of Te Pae Tata is: Whānau are strong, safe and prosperous – active within their community, living with a clear sense of identity and cultural integrity and with control over their destiny – Te mana kaha o te whānau!

You can read more about this strategy on the Ministry of Social Development website.
