This report investigates the health of the Māori language in Waiariki in 2006. For the purposes of this report Waiariki is defined as the Tauranga, Ōpōtiki, Western Bay of Plenty, Kawerau, Rotorua, Taupō, and Whakatāne districts. This is one of eight reports on the health of the Māori language at a regional level. This report is divided into five main sections: a brief history of the Māori language in Waiariki; Māori language knowledge and proficiency in the region; use of the Māori language within the whānau; the provision of Māori language services; and summary and conclusion.
