The employment of qualified Māori staff in the sector ensures that young Māori receive high quality education, as well as providing them with role models to guide them. The number of Māori teaching staff in ECE services rose by 30 percent between 2005 and 2008. In the same period, the total number of ECE staff increased by 22 percent. Additionally, in 2005, 42 percent of Māori ECE staff had an ECE qualification; by 2008, this had risen to 48 percent.
