National Māori Flag Consultation

Māori can have their say about a national Māori flag by attending one of the 21 hui being held throughout the country or by completing an online submission form or writing to the Minister of Māori Affairs.

Māori will be asked:

  1. Of four possible flags, which would you choose as a national Māori flag to represent Māori?
    1. National Flag of New Zealand (Flag of the Independent Tribes1)
    2. The New Zealand Flag
    3. The New Zealand Red Ensign
    4. The Māori Flag (the Tino Rangatiratanga Flag)
  2. What occasions should a national Māori flag be flown?
    1. only on Waitangi Day
    2. on Waitangi Day and other special national occasions, such as ANZAC Day, Queen’s Birthday.

What happens to your Feedback?

All comments received at these hui will be recorded, collated and compiled for the Minister of Māori Affairs to consider.

If I can’t get to the Hui can I still have my say?

YES. In addition to making oral submissions at the hui, you will also be able to send a written submission to the Minister of Māori Affairs with your preferences to the addresses at the bottom of the page. Another option is to make an online submission at www.tpk.govt.nz/maoriflag

The final date for all submissions is 5pm on Friday 28 August 2009. The final report to the Minster of Māori Affairs will include an analysis of all submissions received.
