Navigating around the map

Tools

A selection of tools is available at the right of the map window. Click on one of the following radio buttons to select the appropriate mode:

  • Center
Re-centres a selected location on the map. If the Center radio button is selected, when you click on a location, the map will be redrawn with the selected location in the centre.
  • Zoom in
Zooms in to get a “close-up” view of a location on the map. If the Zoom in radio button is selected, each click on a location zooms in by 50%, eg, if the map displays 224 km, one click will zoom in to 112 km. The closest view is 0.875 km. Zoom in also re-centres the map at the location clicked upon.
  • Zoom out
Zooms out to see more of a location on the map at a reduced size. If the Zoom out radio button is selected, each click on a location zooms out by 200%, eg, if the map displays 112 km, one click will zoom out to 224 km. The largest view is 1792 km. Zoom out also re-centres the map at the location clicked upon.
  • Info
Displays the Māori Land Court data for the selected land block. If the Info radio button is selected, when you click on a land block, the relevant Māori Land Court data is displayed.

Zoom bar

The zoom bar is located at the left of the map window. This is a quick way of zooming in and out. The darker the colour, the further you zoom out, to a maximum of 1792 km. The lighter the colour, the closer you zoom in, to a minimum of 0.875km.

Directional buttons

These are marked N, S, E, W to indicate North, South, East and West. They are located on all four sides of the map. When you click on a button, the view of the map moves in the direction indicated on the button, eg, to look North of the current view, click on the N button.

Searching for a particular land block

Below the tools at the right of the map window, is a search facility which allows you to search for particular land blocks by title:

  1. Type part of the title of the land block in the search box, eg, "Whaka" (without the quotation marks). Note: The search engine will retrieve the phrase you typed in wherever it appears in the title, eg, searching on "whaka" will retrieve not only "Whakatoa", but also "Ngawhakatutu". Searching is not case sensitive, so you don't need to worry about upper and lower-case.
  2. Click on the Search button below the search box.
  3. A list of land blocks will appear containing the phrase that you entered.
  4. Select the land block that you are interested in.
  5. Click on the Map button at the bottom of the list.
  6. The map of the selected land block will appear, with the Māori Land Court data for the land block displayed below.
  7. You can then use the zoom tools to zoom out and navigate around the map.
