Governance and Appointments

Have you thought about being on a Government board?

Te Puni Kōkiri advises the Government on suitable candidates for many of the appointments to government boards, committees and advisory groups. The Governance and Appointments Service maintains a database of candidates with suitable expertise and recommends names of potential candidates on to Ministers and agencies wishing to make appointments to these bodies.

Who can register?

Anyone of Māori descent who believes they have the skills, qualities and commitment to make a strong contribution to a government statutory board, committee or advisory group, can register on the database.

Recommendations for appointment will be based on the skills and qualifications requested by the board seeking to fill its vacancy. Generally speaking, agencies are seeking people with considerable senior level experience and sector expertise.

Sector experience most in demand is in:

  • Financial and business management
  • Education, health and social policy development
  • Engineering, resource management, science and technology, and other applied technical fields
  • Research and ethics
  • Public sector management and
  • Iwi and/or community development work.

Organisations we nominate to

We put forward nominations for a range of Government and some private organisations including:

  • Organisations for which the Minister of Māori Affairs is responsible for appointment, including:
    • TVNZ
    • Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission/Te Ohu Kai Moana
    • Māori Broadcasting Funding Agency/Te Māngai Pāho
    • Māori Language Commission/Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori, and
    • Waitangi Tribunal/Te Rōpū Whakamana i te Tiriti o Waitangi
    • Māori Television Service
    • Poutama Trust
  • State Owned Enterprises and Crown Research Institutes
  • Sector organisations, eg,
    • Environmental Risk Management Authority
  • Government organisations and agencies, eg,
    • Accident Compensation Corporation, and
  • Ad hoc government advisory groups.

How it works

  1. You register with the Nominations Service.
  2. When we are asked for nominations, we search the database, matching the requirements of the position with the skills and experience of the people on our database.
  3. We then recommend suitable candidates on to the Minister or agency who has made the request.

FAQ

Is this a jobs database?

No. We're sorry, but we can't help anyone find a job. We're looking for people to serve on government boards, committees and advisory groups.

I've just graduated, should I send you my name?

Congratulations on your achievement. Generally speaking, agencies are looking for people with extensive senior level work experience, so you may want to wait until you have built up a working CV.

Can I nominate someone else?

If you'd like to nominate someone else please send their full contact details with a brief summary of their skills and experience. We can then contact them directly to follow up.

Will you put my name forward for everything?

Agencies request the skills, qualifications and experience they need and we match candidates carefully with the requirements of each position.    Your name will not be automatically forwarded for nomination.

If I'm offered an appointment, can I turn it down?

You are not obliged to accept an appointment if it is offered to you.

Are my details confidential?

The information we hold on the database and any CVs (curriculum vitae) are used only by our Governance and/or Appointments Service for nominating and appointing candidates. We treat this information in strict confidence.

How can I check the information you have about me?

The right to access and correct your personal information is provided for by the Privacy Act 1993. Email us at nominations.service@tpk.govt.nz to update your CV details.
