An independent panel of Māori with expertise in te reo revitalisation; the New Zealand television industry; and broadcasting legislation are calling for submissions to a review of the legislation governing the Māori Television Service.
A review of the Māori Television Service Act 2003 is being undertaken and anyone interested in making a submission is being invited to do so between now and the end of February 2009.
Te Kāhui o Māhutonga is the name of the three-person review panel comprising Tainui Stephens, Hone Edwards and Jane Huria.
Chair Tainui Stephens says the review is looking at the operation and effectiveness of the Act not the Māori Television Service itself.
“The MTS Act 2003 requires a review be done five years after the legislation was commenced and the Act also specifies the areas the review should focus on,” Tainui Stephens says.
“This means that any operational activities of the Māori Television Service including any decisions about programme content or timing and other editorial matters are not part of the review.”
The review will likely cover the following issues:
“The Māori Television Service has been a popular and critical success. Our task is to research and assess the ‘fit for purpose’ nature of the legislation. Our main aim is to evaluate the ability of the law to enable the long term health of the Māori language through broadcasting,” Tainui Stephens says.
