Central North Island Forestry Treaty Settlement

On 25 June 2008, the Crown signed a Deed of Settlement with the seven iwi who are members of the Central North Island Collective - Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Whakaue, Ngāti Whare, Ngāti Manawa, Raukawa, and the Affiliate Te Arawa Iwi and Hapū.

The Deed of Settlement transfers 176,000 hectares of Crown forestry licensed land and accumulated rentals to the iwi as a on-account settlement of their historical Treaty claims.

As part of the consultation process for this settlement, Te Puni Kōkiri facilitated four public consultation hui in Rotorua, Taupō, Murupara and Whanganui. Summaries of discussion recorded at the hui are available here:
