The Health of the Māori Language in the South Island 2006

This report investigates the health of the Māori language in Te Waipounamu in 2006. For the purposes of this report, Te Waipounamu is defined as Southland, Otago, West Coast, Canterbury and the Chathams. This is one of eight reports on the health of the Māori language at a regional level. This report is divided into five main sections: a brief history of the Māori language in Te Waipounamu; Māori language knowledge and proficiency in the region; use of the Māori language within the whānau; the provision of Māori language services; and summary and conclusion.
