The Health of the Māori Language in Te Tairawhiti and Takitimu 2006

This report investigates the health of the Māori language in Te Tairāwhiti and Tākitimu in 2006. For the purposes of this report, Te Tairāwhiti includes the Gisborne regional council area and Tākitimu includes the Hawkes Bay regional council area and the Wairarapa district. This is one of eight reports on the health of the Māori language at a regional level. This report is divided into five main sections: a brief history of the Māori language in Te Tairāwhiti and Tākitimu; Māori language knowledge and proficiency in the region; use of the Māori language within the whānau; the provision of Māori language services; and summary and conclusion.
