award winners

Tënā koutou katoa,

I was privileged to attend the 2009 Māori Sports Awards, held in Manukau at the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre. It was a fantastic experience; I have never been to an event quite that prestigious and exciting. I met many of my role models, both award recipients and finalists. The calibre of Māori sporting prowess on display was outstanding. The event strengthened my motivation and drive to achieve to the highest of my ability. I’m passionate about sports, specifically softball, and play for Rotorua club Marist Senior Men’s team. I also played rugby for my school 1st XV.

The ceremony attracted many entertainers, TV personalities, Members of Parliament, and sports stars at the top of their game. One of the highlights was meeting Australian Idol winner Stan Walker backstage. He is very humble and incredibly talented.

I would like to thank Te Puni Kōkiri for the opportunity to attend the awards ceremony and providing me with further motivation to excel in my sport. I’m going to enrol in the navy to become a diver and hopefully continue with my sports and, who knows, maybe one day I might be a finalist at the Māori Sports Awards.
