Māori Wardens Project

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Te Puni Kōkiri involved with the Māori Wardens putea from the Government?

The Government directed that the funds be administered by Te Puni Kōkiri on an interim base until a new governance entity has been established to take Māori wardens forward.

Is a defensive driving course available?

Not at this stage. If you believe it is a good course to do, and for the Māori Warden Project to include it, contact your Regional Coordinator to follow this up.

Can courses be delivered in the Regions?

Yes.

I cannot take time away from work or my whānau during the week. Can courses be delivered in the weekends?

Yes. However you will need to have the numbers to confirm weekend courses.

Is there training for Rangatahi?

Not directly. You could apply for funding through the Māori Warden Project to provide a course more relevant to Rangatahi needs for Māori Warden Training. See the Funding brochure for further assistance.

Can we use funding to pay for the administration, financial management and governance of our sub-association?

If you are talking about paying someone to do this, no. However, you can apply through the fund to purchase equipment to help with the administration and financial management. It could also be used to hold a Hui around the strategic planning (governance related) for your sub-association.

My uniform does not fit me properly, and other members do not have full uniforms. Can the Māori Warden Project buy us new shoes and our uniform?

You are not able to get a new uniform through the Māori Warden Project unless you have completed the Te Akoranga Pirihīmana course.

Can we purchase a vehicle through the Māori Warden Project?

No. However, throughout the country there are Vans that can be used by sub-associations. They are held by the Regional Coordinators and work on a booking system. Each van is provided with a safety kit and there are rules and regulations around using it. Contact your local Regional Coordinator to discuss this.

I submitted my warrant renewal application a long time ago. What has happened to it?

Call 0800 991 882 to see if Te Puni Kōkiri has received it.
