On Thursday, 1 July 2010 the Minister of Māori Affairs, Hon Dr Pita Sharples, sent out a call for nominations to establish a 15 member Māori Youth Council.
The Māori Youth Council was established to provide practical advice and feedback on relevant public policy and initiatives that have a significant impact on rangatahi Māori. The primary focus of the Māori Youth Council is on achieving best outcomes for rangatahi through the development of youth leadership.
Nominations were sought from rangatahi Māori who have a primary interest in promoting and advocating rangatahi issues, are aged between 18-25 years, with a range of personal backgrounds and experiences. Nominations closed on 30 July 2010.
The term of membership on the Māori Youth Council is for a period of one year and positions are voluntary.
