Our Work Streams

Education and Training

The Māori Economic Taskforce Education and Training work stream’s focus is to undertake initiatives that build on positive distinctly Māori initiatives. At a practical level, this will involve conversations with leaders in government and the education sector as well as with the Māori community.

Two key strategies which the Taskforce will investigate are:

Bridging Tertiary to Secondary

  • Using existing tertiary and secondary education resources and facilities to enhance community access and assist secondary school students to remain engaged in education

  • Building on the work that was developed by the Secondary Futures School Taskforce, other committees and research to identify the distinctiveness of positive Māori initiatives

  • Exploring new ways of education delivery for example utilising the strengths of the marae and Māori PTE groups to deliver education in specialised areas

 Māori Trades Training

  • Māori interests within the primary sector are significant. As this sector develops and grows it will require graduates with the skills to operate in both Māori and non-Māori environments.

  • Creating an educational strategy that ensures the needs of the primary sector are recognised and met is important to the taskforce.

  • The Trades Training initiatives are aimed at addressing educational needs of the individual and providing skills and knowledge for the Māori economy.

  • The short-to-long-term initiatives to be explored are:
    • collaborative educational delivery
    • Māori Primary Sector Training Alliances
    • Trade Training models for the 21st century
    • reflecting on our past to advance our future.

This work will be supported by analysing current policy approaches and interventions.
